How to Use Arlo Without Sacrificing Your Privacy

Arlo cameras are smart and powerful — but they also raise a good question: What about your privacy?

With the right settings, you can use Arlo to protect your home without exposing your personal life or sensitive data.

Here’s how to keep your system effective — and private.

1. Use Local Storage Instead of Cloud (If Possible)

Most Arlo hubs support local recording with USB or SD cards. That means your footage stays offline — safe from hacks or leaks.

How to enable it:

• Plug a USB drive into your Arlo SmartHub
• Enable “Local Storage” in the Arlo app
• Access videos while connected to your home Wi-Fi

2. Secure Your Arlo Account

Your account is the front door to your camera system. Lock it down:

• Use a strong, unique password
• Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA)
• Review active logins under Account Settings

3. Limit App Permissions on Your Phone

Arlo doesn’t need full access to everything on your device.

• Allow camera/microphone access only while using the app
• Disable location unless using geofencing
• Avoid sharing your entire photo library

4. Create a Privacy Mode for Indoor Cameras

Use a custom Mode or Geofencing to turn off indoor cameras when you’re home. This gives you privacy while keeping outdoor protection active.

Example: “Home Mode” = Indoor cameras off, outdoor cameras still active.
