Best TIG Welding Helmet - Guide & Reviews

On the job injuries are not uncommon for welders, but by taking proper safety precautions you avoid some of the risks.

One of the most basic safety tips is to dress for success, many noting the importance of a welding helmet to protect your face and eyes from the intense heat and flashes associated with welding.

For TIG welding, the act of slowly melting rods into a puddle, the process is much slower and precise, which is why it is important to have the best type of welding helmet for the type of job you are doing. While most of the following welding helmets are rated for multiple types of welding, you should look at all the features of the helmet before making a decision.

The following are what I would consider to be the best options for a TIG welding helmet:

1.Miller 251292 Classic Series 8-12 Variable Shade Auto-Darkening Welding Helmet

DEWALT DWE402 4-1 2-Inch 11-Amp Paddle Switch Angle Grinder

This is widely considered a great option for someone who is just starting out. Made out of extremely durable plastic, it is adjustable to fit your head and darkens instantaneously. Not only does it come with the front and inside lens covers that are pre-installed, the package includes five extra front covers and two extra inside lens covers.

The auto darkening feature is helpful to not getting flashed while wearing the helmet. Another perk of the Miller helmet is that it is adjustable to securely fit around your head, but you can also adjust how close you want your face to the inside of the helmet.

This way if you are someone who wants your eyes to be really close to the lens for added visibility you are able to move your face closer to the lens.

The only thing I really worry about for this helmet is how fragile the knobs that adjust the tension that holds the hood in place when you flip it up feel, but there seems to be no issues with them.

Key features

  • Comes with extra lens covers
  • five front and two inside- Solid black design with no graphics
  • Helmet weighs only 2 pounds- Powered by solar and AAA batteries with a 2000 hour expected battery life
  • Viewing area is 5-1/5 sq. in.
  • Auto darkening
  • Adjustable to size of your head as well as how far your face is from the lens

2.Antra AH7-860-6218 Solar Power Auto Darkening Welding Helmet

This welding helmet is great for professional use. It features an auto darkening filter and is supposed to be suitable for all Arc Welding processes such as MIG, MAG, TIG, SMAW, Plasma and Carbon.

The wearer will be protected against UV and IR radiation in the event of electrical failure.

This specially designed helmet uses solar power rechargeable batteries and they are replaceable if they were to stop working.

A push and twist knob makes adjusting this helmet super easy and the smooth headband adds extra comfort.

The large viewing area allows you to easily put down welds and the auto dimming helps to avoid injury from flash.

The main downside to this welding helmet is that it does not have as many options to adjust the fit to your head or the space between your face and the viewing lens. However, the large viewing lens does help counteract not being able to move your face closer because you are able to see more than other helmets on the market.

Key features

  • Skull design on helmet

This way if you are someone who wants your eyes to be really close to the lens for added visibility you are able to move your face closer to the lens.

While this helmet does not feature an auto darkening feature, it is good for someone who is looking for a backup to their main helmet or a helmet to use when doing a small, non-complicated project.

If you are a beginner or someone who only does the odd job that requires small amounts of welding this would be a great fit for you, but if you are looking for something for everyday use I would consider getting a helmet that costs a little more and has the auto darkening feature.

In the end, I believe paying a little extra money for a more reliable welding helmet is worth every penny, because you are protecting yourself and, most importantly, your eyes against flashes.

The Antra AH7-860-6218 Solar Power Auto Darkening Welding Helmet would be my top pick for everyday use of these options.

The large viewing area and solar powered auto darkening were big bonuses for me. The only feature that I wish this one had was for it to have better adjustments for the fit.
